Judy Schuster’s work explores duality in people, suggesting different aspects of personality, interlocking pieces of our individual puzzles, and the layering of complexity in our humanness. She is fascinated with the concept of disrupted images, the way our brains seek closure, and the richness achieved by visual surface variation, and uses these to convey duality.
Intrigued with the idea of combining the products of traditional and contemporary technologies in an artwork, she’s worked in a variety of media to express this concept in portraiture. Products include tapestries, artists’ books, collage, beaded works, paintings, and multimedia combinations. Techniques used include weaving and embroidery, silk-screen printing, painting, collage, digital manipulation, and image transfer.
Schuster’s work has been exhibited internationally, featured in a film and in numerous publications. Formal education includes a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts from California State University at Long Beach, a Bachelor’s Degree in Textiles from Cornell University, and postgraduate studies in computer graphics. She was a demonstrating artist in The Computer Graphics Studio of The California Museum of Science and Industry, Los Angeles.
